The Ferguson Shooting and My Son

Image

The Ferguson shooting and so many incidents like it scare me. I am the mother of four children. Three girls and one son. I call my son, “my son, my son, my golden one.” He has beautiful hopes and dreams for the future.  When Barak Obama was first elected president my son said when he grew up, he would be president and Obama could be his vice president. In the years since his plans and life have remained lofty and good. My son is tall for his age. He is tall, intelligent, talkative and has a strong sense of right and wrong. He argues passionately to prove his points and to have his voice heard. In most contexts, these would all be wonderful things. But, this is 2014 in America and my son is a little black boy.

Tell the naysayers in your life to shut up and then keep following your dreams!
It is terrific to realize that you can control the naysayers in your life by telling them to shut up! In all my roles including: wife, mother, advisor ad writer I am always a cheerleader. Anyone who has a dream can always count on me to push them toward their dreams and to believe they can reach the stars. It costs me nothing to believe in the power of another person’s dreams. In fact I gain when I believe in someone else’s dreams and help them achieve. The person who gets the benefit of my pushing and cheerleading gains support and an accountability partner. It is an easy win-win for us both.

Yesterday I had conversations with three different friends who were all wonderful women, smart, talented, educated, attractive and just awesome in so many ways. But they were overcome by the voice of naysayers and were not reaching their full potential. There is a popular saying that “game recognizes game.” It means that people who are a certain way recognize others that are that way. I know what it is like to be hurt, crippled and diminished by naysayers because I have experienced that in my life.

The Family that Works Together Stays Together

You can find serenity in having your children join the family business. This blog is called Janeane’s World. It was originally created as a way of helping my friends and I to have a good day every day. As time went on the blog posts became articles. The design of the blog articles grew and the mission of the blog grew to be a place to showcase the thoughts, dreams and ideas of the modern woman dealing with family, work and life.  While I have never been a traditional mommy blogger, I have always been proud to be a wife and mother who blogs.

My children have always suggested article topics, sponsored posts to accept and design themes for the blog.  A few months ago, my son Peyton  joined the team at Janeane’s World  and started giving all kinds of suggestions for improving engagement and helping readers. In exchange for his assistance, he earns 10% of whatever is earned here. His younger sisters not to be outdone, decided they wanted to join the team as well.  My daughter Zahirah is now a photographer for Janeane’s World. Her twin Camille,  joined the team as our official Cuteness Ambassador. Currently, the twins are satisfied with a salary of $1.00 per month. Last but not least, my eldest daughter Euphoria who blogs at Black Girl Brown Sugar agreed to consult and guest post from time to time.  She has not asked for a salary. Perhaps the tuition we will be paying for the next four years to Spelman College caused her to show us mercy in the salary department.
a mother advocates for her children www.janeanesworld.com

It is sensational to know that you can advocate for your children and to get the tools to do it.Before I began working as a writer and a blogger I worked as an attorney. It was wonderful work. I loved fighting for my clients, doing all I could to help them achieve their goals. I took my role as an advocate for others seriously. So, it was only natural that I see one of my primary roles as a mother to be an advocate for my children.
Each day I am called upon to advocate for my children in a variety of circumstances. These circumstances range from things as simple as getting the exact toy a child wants from the toy store to making sure my daughter gets the opportunities she wants at college. That range of experiences is common to mothers the world over. At the same time, there are other areas where a mother must be an advocate for her children.
power- don't use it only for evil www.janeanesworld.com
It is terrific to learn that power can be used for good and does not have to be used to hurt those around you.  One definition of power found in New Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary  is the “ability or capacity to do something,” “control or dominion or a position of control, dominion or authority,” and “a person who exercises control, influence or authority.”  These definitions, in and of themselves are not inherently negative, harmful or bad. This means that neither power itself or the exercise of power should be seen as negative or something to avoid or fear. Many people have heard the expression, “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” This means that it is not power itself that is the problem, but how one uses power that causes problems.
My favorite blog post of all time, is the story about how I met my husband.
Karl Marx, Max Engel, communist, communism, honor's program, college, husband, pick up line, best pick up line ever
It is sensational to look at an old book in a new way. The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx is one of my favorite books. Not for its political point of view or its arguments on communism and how the world should be run. It is one of my favorite books because it got me a husband. I read the book more than 26 years ago and to be honest, I don’t remember most of it. The Communist Manifesto is one of my favorite books because when I was reading it as part of my college honor’s program I met my husband. I was sitting in a lounge area reading the book when my husband walked up to me and said what to this date is the best pick up line ever, “Karl Marx was an idiot.”
As you look back at the past year, what made you smile, what made you cry and what was your favorite moment of all time?
