Use Your Technology to Have Fun

Happy African American woman using technology and the words "Use Your Technology to Have Fun"
Use your technology to have fun! So often we are attached to our technology for work, but keep in mind, technology really can be fun! Everyone once in a while, turn off the work and find a thing that you can do with technology purely for enjoyment. If you can’t think of something, ask a kid. You will be amazed at how quickly they can find fun with technology!

Technology can be fun.

I am a gadget person. I have a smartphone, tablet, laptop, e-reader, and a bunch of other gadgets and devices. Devices are part of my life. I do my work on my laptop, phone, and tablet. My calendar is electronic. Even my vision boards are electronic. My favorite way to read, you guessed it, on a gadget, my e-reader. The first thing I look at whenever I buy a gadget is how it will work, how it will make it easier for me to do my job. It is important for me to have all my electronics be hard-working, multi-purpose, powerhouse machines.

Increasingly, I want my devices to be something I can have fun with as well. Of course, my devices all have Netflix because who can live without marathons of movies and television series? Additionally, I usually have several games like 2048, Sudoku, and Scrabble just to name a few. I make sure to add my favorite audiobook and podcast programs so that I can be entertained while walking or waiting in line.  I opened my account with Audible years ago before it was purchased by Amazon. Of course, I keep a Kindle e-reader program and a magazine program like Texture on hand because you cannot leave the house without something to read.

We spend so much money on gadgets. It doesn’t make sense for them to have one purpose only – work. It makes more sense to make our gadgets multi-purpose things we can use for work and fun. Think about how much time you spend with your gadgets, technology, and devices. The typical workday is 8 hours long. Most people work at least 5 days per week. This means that 40 hours a week you are using your gadgets, technology, and devices to work, make money and be all about taking care of business. That is all well and good. But, it ignores the fact that there are 24 hours in each day. When the workday is done and your time is your own, you need something on your smartphone that you can do for fun.
All work and no play make Jack a dull boy, but all play and no work make Jack a jerk. When it comes to having fun on your devices, gadgets, and technology, remember it is all about balance. Do not spend so much time having fun, that you neglect your work. A few years ago people went crazy with games like Candy Crush Saga, Angry Birds, and Words with Friends. There were stories all over the news about people neglecting work and family obligations in order to play their games. That is not what you should aim to do. Instead, you should aim to work hard when it is time for work. Then when it is time for fun, play hard, enjoy yourself and use your technology to the fullest.

If you don’t know how to have fun with gadgets, ask a kid.

Everyone in my family loves gadgets. When my son was three years old, he had a crush on a family friend. It has been  9 years, but I still remember the proposal he gave a family friend, “Miss Karla, I am going to marry you and buy you a house, a car, and gadgets.” Even as a toddler he knew that the way to some women’s hearts was electronic.  Kids seem to have a natural affinity for electronic gadgets.  We all have stories about children who have to program the television for their parents. So, if you really want to have fun with your gadgets, ask a kid.

When adults get a new gadget, they are often timid. Adults, even if they do not read the manual, they are often reserved about their devices. Children are not reserved at all. If you give a kid your smartphone, if she is anything like my kids, she will immediately find the app store and start downloading all kinds of talking dog and cat games, Minecraft knockoffs, and seven other forms of silliness. I do not know how they do it, but kids just are able to get the remote working, start recording shows on your DVR and change the wallpaper on our tablet in almost the blink of an eye. They are fearless. They don’t worry about memory, whether things are compatible or rational questions like those. When a kid gets hold of your device, all she thinks about is how much fun she will have playing all her new games on your devices.
Think for a moment how life would be if you added a little fun to the mix. Instead of using your computer, tablet, and smartphone for work only, think about some of the great fun you could have if you got a little of the kid-like fearlessness in the way you used your gadgets. What do you do for fun? Think about it and then think about whether there is an app for it. There are apps for almost everything. This means that no matter what it is you do for fun, there is an app for that. Get out your device and try to find it.  If you cannot find the fun app you want, ask a kid.
So, use your device for work, make money, run your business and make life better and more efficient. But, do not forget to use your device for a little fun. So, the question for you this terrific day is, what is the most fun you have had with your technology?

  1. So true! I recently finally downloaded some games for myself on my phone! Plus I started reading again even if its just ebooks on my phone.

  2. I like to use mine for work and play too. Crossy Road and Candy Crush are faves. 🙂

  3. That is a riot. I spent some time recently with 9 year old triplets and they were pros at the ipad….amazing how the times have changed.

  4. I use my phone a low when we are waiting for Taekwondo. Great to get some work done while waiting.

  5. This is so true. I do like having a few game apps on my phone to pass the time. Those puzzle apps like Bejeweled are so addicting!

  6. It’s so true! I definitely make use of my gadgets mostly for work purposes, but occasionally throw in a little bit of fun too. I also do a lot of shopping with them!

  7. It’s surprising to see how much the kids actually know when it comes to technology. When I was their age I didn’t even know how to turn on a computer let alone use the dang thing!

  8. You are so right about asking kid LOL. They are so savvy with technology these days 🙂
