It’s My Birthday – What Shall I Give the World?

Your-birthday-comes-but

Once a year, each person has a birthday. Normally it is a time of reflection and contemplation. This year as I celebrate my birthday, I wonder, what is the legacy I am leaving behind? What is the message in my life?

When your birthday comes each year, what do you think and what do you do?

For most people, birthdays are usually good days. On your birthday, traditionally people are good to you. You are given presents, you are complimented. With the internet and social media, you can receive birthday wishes literally from all over the globe. it is a great thing. In many cases, your birthday is the only day you have the attention of the world at large and can make big, bold and incredible statements. Think of your birthday as an opportunity to create a legacy you will be happy to look back at on future birthdays.

No matter what type of work I have done professionally over the course of my life, I have always been a teacher, a helper and counselor and an advisor. It brings me joy to encourage, inspire and motivate others to achieve the great things in their dreams. My life is enriched and made better each time I help another person to achieve their dreams. I am a church girl at heart. Church girls often talk about their mission and the area of ministry where they will serve. My ministry is in using words to encourage, inspire and motivate others. It the gift with which I have been blessed and a way for me to serve God.

On my birthday, my family, of course, gives me gifts, compliments and kindness. Friends call, write and send birthday cheer. Through the mystery and magic of the internet and social media, I get birthday wishes from around the world – literally around the world. It amazes me, surprises me and indeed thrills me. When I receive messages from people who wish me a happy birthday, compliment me and thank me for providing some type of encouragement, inspiration and motivation I feel successful. Yes, I get satisfaction from doing those things, but there is something wonderful about hearing from others that what you think is your life mission is actually working!

Your birthday comes but once each year, when it does pick a way to make a mark on the world during the course of the next year.

I encourage you to look at your birthday as an opportunity to receive and to give something, your best self to the world. On your birthday, sit back, relax and enjoy all the gifts, compliments and good wishes. If possible, save them. Place all the cards in a special box or folder, do screen shots of the good wishes, print them out and add them to the collection of cards. You will be able to pull these out and look at them all year long when you have hard days. I know people say it is better to give than to receive. But, on your birthday, it is your chance to receive, so enjoy receiving. Enjoy being special. Enjoy all the good things that come your way. Enjoy the good feelings and the smiles the day brings you. Don’t forget to get a slice of cake! Birthday cake is special and I think it is an essential food group item!

  1. I like receiving good treatment, good gifts and all the other wonderful things on my birthday. Then, when my day is done, it is nice to give to others in my own special way.

  2. I love the idea of taking screenshots of your cards so they are there to buoy you in the hard days. I wish you a beautiful birthday. You have brightened my world today.

  3. I love the “giving back” mentality. I look forward to being spoiled on my birthday but that wasn’t always the case. In my 20’s, I felt uncomfortable with birthdays because it was hard for me to be on the receiving end of giving. I’m over that now.
    Happy Birthday!

  4. I want to start doing this with my kids on their birthday too. Never too early to start. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!

  5. Happy Birthday! I think I need to rethink my strategy because birthdays often stress me out. I’d love to spend them focusing on a word for the year or for giving back.

  6. Happy birthday! You give so much inspiration to readers every single day.

  7. Happy Birthday to you. On my birthday I prefer giving that receiving but I guess giving back is a good way to celebrate your birthday. 🙂

  8. Happy Birthday to you! Hope you have a wonderful one!
