We live in a three-story house. When my oldest daughter is home from college she spends a lot of time when she is not out and about in her room. Before smart phones, we were forced to yell up the stairs or send one of her siblings up the steps to get her. It is a pain in the neck and LOUD. What we started doing is using our technology. Instead of sending a young sibling to get our oldest, we send a text message. She is 18 years old, so you know the phone is glued to her at all times!
My son, the twelve-year-old, is a technocrat, in other words, he wants everything to be exact and well-defined. In the past I would give him a list of chores to do. I would tell him what I wanted and invariably, he would “forget” half the list. When we would ask him to write the list down it would take forever. Now I send him a text message of the chores I want him to do. This works wonderfully! We get to tell him exactly what we want done, it is there for him to see and we have record of exactly what was asked. It makes it easier to determine what was done and whether or not things were completed.

Most smart phones have features that create photos, videos and voice recordings. My son loves, absolutely loves, those features. When his little sisters are getting on his nerves, he turns on the voice recorder or video recorder to capture the entire incident. While these recordings help his sisters get in trouble more often, he gets in trouble less often because he has to be good on the recording since it is evidence.
In addition, the Skype feature is great when we go to the store to get things for other family members. Instead of being confused about what a person wants, it is easy to call each other via Skype, show the items in question and get questions answered. It is so cool! These are just a few of the ways our family uses our smart phones to communicate in smarter and quieter manner!
