Love – Satisfying Work and a Good Family

It is fantastic to have satisfying work and a good family.

Readers of a certain age will remember the movie Mahogany  starring Diana Ross and Billie Dee Williams. There was a great line in the movie where Billie Dee’s character told Diana Ross’ character that all her success at work meant nothing if she had no one at home with whom to share it. For me, having a loving, caring family at home to share my successes and accomplishments is more valuable than the accomplishments and successes.

I like to call myself a Proverbs Wife. For those not familiar with the Bible, this is the wife described in Proverbs 31, verses 10 to 31. She is a wonderful woman who has it all together. Here are a few of her qualities:

  • she is more precious than rubies
  • she is trusted by her husband
  • she keeps her home adequately supplied
  • she is strong and in good physical shape
  • she dresses beautifully
  • she operates businesses
  • she is honorable
  • she has a reputation for virtue
  • she has a good reputation that proceeds her

When you look at that list, you see a woman who has satisfying work and a good family.  She has qualities that make her valuable in the workplace and in the home. A person does not have to share the Christian faith to think a woman possessing all these qualities is a woman to be admired and respected.
One should always strive to be a person who is admired and respected. It is important to put forth one’s best efforts at work. An employee is duty bound, honor bound and required to put forth her best efforts in the workplace. When carrying out tasks at work one should plan out the day to be sure that all important tasks get done properly and in a timely manner. This statement remains the same whether you work for a Fortune 500 company or  for your family.  At the same time when you are the member of a family you must take care to show your family that family is important, precious and valuable to you. The tasks that need to be done in a home should be carried out with diligence, dedication and a determination to get the job done fully and completely. All work done inside and outside the home has value, importance and is deserving of our best efforts.

Satisfying work and a good family are things that are highly desired. There are many people who have work but no family. I have a friend who has a wonderful job that she does well and where she is seen as model of success. She cries herself to sleep many nights because she wants to be a wife and mother and is having trouble getting dates. I have other friends who have wonderful husbands and terrific children but cry themselves to sleep because they want work outside the home and cannot find it. Please keep in mind this is not to say that having both is the ideal or that every woman should strive to be a success in the workplace and in the home. There are many women who are happy and satisfied with having one or the other. That is a beautiful thing and a good and valued choice and a choice that should be respected.

I want to celebrate the fact that it is a fantastic thing to have satisfying work and a good family. So, the question for you this fantastic day is, if you are a woman with satisfying work and a good family do you show your appreciation for those blessings?

  1. I have been wealthy and I have been less than wealthy, what made it all ok was that I had a good husband with me and I wasn’t alone!

  2. You are so right–the 2 really do go hand in hand.A good example of that was seeing Beyonce’s HBO documentary this weekend. What she showed was how having both is what is the real success–not the material things.

  3. Thanks Saidah. I truly believe that the Proverbs 31 woman is the absolute role model for wives and mothers. I hope this gives people an idea that makes them want to go check her out in full for themselves and develop a better relationship with God as a result.

  4. I am a stay at home wife and mom plus I own and operate a business from home. I thank God everyday for this life He’s given me. I get to encourage, inspire and ignite women’s passion for biblical living via my site each day and I wouldn’t have it any other way. This was such a great post Janeane. You given your readers a QuickStart guide for anyone not familiar with Proverbs 31.
