4 Benefits of Family Game Night

After all, what makes the multi-million dollar game industry run is the fact that playing games is fun. If you have children, try playing a board game with them and watch the trash talk, laughter and silliness that will ensue. During board games we have has some of the most fun, pure simple fun of our lives. It is amazing how much fun you can have as a family when everyone is around the table yelling Uno or trying to buy houses and hotels while playing Monopoly. Recently, we played Spelmanopoly (the Spelman College version of the game) and between the trash talking, the plotting and the double teaming, we had the best evening! Two hours went by like it was just 15 minutes and we all went off to bed craving more time together.

Family game time is a great way to sneak in some education. There are all kinds of things we need to teach our children and family game time is a great way to get that education in without blackboards and homework. If you want your children to get better at math, board games like Monopoly and Life help that happen. Games like Uno, Blink and Pitty Pat help children learn about patterns, matching and fast thinking. In addition, family game time is a great time to teach your children how to lose and how to win with grace and dignity.

Important conversations can take place during family game time. Family fame time is a perfect time to have conversations about religion, politics and social issues. When the family is together and everyone is having a good time, engaged in an epic battle for dining room domination, you can talk about the news of the day and the stance you think is the correct one. Conversations during family game time are a way to teach your children your values, religion and moral stances. It is amazing how much children listen and learn during these relaxed and fun moments.

Connections are made and strengthened during family game time. There is nothing like two sister bonding over trying to beat their brother at a game. I have seen a little sister love her big brother just a little more because he let her slide on paying him a fine owed in a game. Children teaming up to beat their parents at games is another way connections between siblings are made. If you want to improve family life, have fun, teach your children things, have some great conversations and build deep connections within the family, get out some games and start family game night at your house.

You can find serenity in establishing family game night and using that time for bonding with your family. So, the question for you this serene day is, what ideas do you have for bonding with your family?

Want to Have Fun – Create a Family Game

The great thing about a family game is that you do not have to create something with mass appeal. The only people who need to like the game are your family members. It also doesn’t have to be fancy. The game doesn’t even have to be creative or innovative. For example, if your family likes Monopoly. Get out your Monopoly board and some small post it pads. Change the names of the squares to names of places in your neighborhood, places your family has gone on vacation or things you want to do.

  1. My husband and I used to do it before the kids came. I will miss all the noise and excitement of it when the kids all grow up and leave home.
