Lyrics to Live By

use music to guide your action

Lyrics are a powerful way to motivate yourself to do great things all year long. I am a big believer in the power of music to guide me as I go through life.

Across the world as we end one year and prepare for the start of another people select their “word of the year” for the new year.  The word of the year is a word that will guide your actions and inspire you to do what you need to do over the course of the next year. I don’t choose a word of the year. I like music so I chose two songs for the new year. These songs will guide my actions and constantly serve as a reminder of what I want to accomplish over the course of the year.  Last year I selected the song “Something Inside” by Lira.

If you want to get what you never got,  you’ve got to do something you’ve never done.

Everyone who reads this blog hears the phrase “take action now” on a regular basis. The idea behind the idea of take action now is that you have to get up and move, you must do something. The phrase take action now implies that the things you want do not come to you, you must get up and go get them. That brings the conversation to my first song of the year for 2017, “Go Get It” by gospel duo, Mary Mary.  Each time I hear the song I start to dance a bit and think about what I need to do. The song inspires me to push forward and follow my plans. The song reminds me that I can do all the big, bold and audacious things I dream about.  The song contains references to hard work, prayer and faith. Those things have always been things I highly value and things I anticipate I will highly value throughout my life.
There is a lot of power in the words of the song. I like the reminder that no matter how hard the past has been, if you survived it, you can use the experience to get stronger and better.

Can’t be mad at the things you’ve been through, cause they built your muscle
Now you’re stronger than you’ve ever been, they can’t stop your hustle.

The song appeals to the church girl in me who heard all her life that faith without work is dead.  The reminder that you must pray and do something is very appealing to me.

So say a prayer start working, you’ve got to do something.

The song also reminds you that hard work is rewarded. I agree with the song’s idea that once you have waited for it, worked for it and prayed for it, it is time to get up and go get what you have been putting in all the effort to get.

You’ve been working, waiting this is what you’ve been praying for . . .
Go get it, go get, go get it, it’s your time.

Here is the video so you can hear the music for yourself. As you watch, listen to the lyrics and look for sources of encouragement, inspiration and motivation in the words.
