To some getting up in the morning is nothing. To me, it is a wonderful blessing that many do not get to experience. In a way, getting up in the morning seems like such a simple thing. After all, everyone who goes to sleep plans, or thinks they will get up the next morning. However, the reality is that none of us is immortal and eventually, we will not wake up in the morning.
For me, since yesterday was not my last day, today is a day for celebration. I am celebrating life. It is amazing to me the fact that I have a life to live and a wonderful family with whom I share that life. My husband and kids might be crazy, but they are mine and I love them. I have come to love their kind of crazy just as they have come to love mine.
A few years ago, my grandmother (in-law) died. She was 97 years old and has been a sharecropper, a mother, a widow, and so many other things. The one thing I remember about her was that she enjoyed life and thought that life was a blessing. One thing she experienced moving from the deep south to the north. She went from being a senior citizen who couldn’t read, to learning to read.
She lived long enough to see some of her own children pass away before her. Additionally, she lived long enough to see the birth of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren. Through it all she lived her life, making her own decisions, and living the life she wanted for herself. She made things the best they could be for her under the circumstances.
As I go forward, I want to remember that long life, any life at all is a blessing. It is a blessing that many people do not get to have. Each day I have a chance to be a better wife, a better mother, a better person. If I seize those opportunities and get better, my life has not been wasted and I show God I appreciate the life He has given me. I want to always be mindful of the fact that getting up in the morning is not something we can do forever. Eventually, we all leave this life for another.
